CONTEMPLATING GEOGRAPHY
Geography is the study of landscape and human interaction with it, ranging from the macro level to small-scale. In this exhibition we move from a wide aperture contemplation of the sweep of sky, horizon and earth to the minutiae of terrain, both geological and botanical.
Peter Di Gesu resides in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia and paints the meeting point of sky and land with impressionist fields of colour. The topography is ambiguous, relating to prairie or ocean or an interior space held in his mind.
Frances Dorsey was on the faculty of NSCAD University for many years. Her exquisite weavings depict the layering of earth, rock and plants that exists in the boulder strewn terrain common to much of the South Shore of Nova Scotia. She uses local plants to hand dye her yarns.
The cultural elements of geography are captured in the boldly coloured anthropomorphic sculptures of glass artist Nadira Narine. They act as vessels for memories and emotions connected to the rich culture of her Panamanian roots.
Presented with the collaboration of the artists and Katzman Art Projects.
This exhibition is curated by Carver Hain Art + Design.
